Evening view from the dinner table…

My wife Melody is turning 28 years old on September 13th, and instead of asking for gifts, she’s asking for $28 donations. It’s not going to her, though. All of it is going to build freshwater wells for people in developing nations. 100% of donations go to providing clean drinking water wells in villages that do not have access to this basic human right. Check out her Charity: Water page for more info!

800,000 in Pakistan can now only be reached by air, and UN needs at least 40 more helicopters to ferry lifesaving aid. More than 1,500 people have been killed while more than 17 million have been affected. Relief Fund here. (photo)

Russia in color, a century ago

Photographer Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii (1863-1944) undertook a photographic survey of the Russian Empire with the support of Tsar Nicholas II, using a specialized camera to capture three black and white images in fairly quick succession, using red, green and blue filters, allowing them to later be recombined and projected with filtered lanterns to show near true color images. Made available by the Library of Congress, which purchased the original glass plates back in 1948.
